Declaring Alternates

While any xhtml tag could technically be used to describe the content of this page, the ‘link’ tag is the only one officially supported by search engines.

<xhtml:link rel=“alternate” hreflang=“de” media=“(max-width: 640px)” href=“” />

rel The ‘rel’ link – could technically be any standard xhtml rel value, however ‘alternate’ is the only one typically used and supported in SEO.
href The URL of the alternate.
hreflang The language and optionally the regional target of the alternate.
media The media query for declaring the target device attributes of the alternate.

If device-specific apps exist, these can also be declared within the XHTML link tag within the HTTP header.

<xhtml:link rel=“alternate” href=“android-app://” />
